As of 21st January 2025, IRCC announced that temporary foreign workers will have limited access to the family open work permits. However, with the significant changes in the country&#39;s labour market needs, housing situations and economic needs, it became necessary to restrict the entry of temporary residents in 2025. These changes intend to strengthen the integrity of temporary resident programs and help the country grow economically at the same time.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"line-height:1.38; margin-top:21px; margin-bottom:5px\"><span style=\"font-size:13.999999999999998pt; font-variant:normal; white-space:pre-wrap\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#434343\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\"><span style=\"font-style:normal\"><span style=\"text-decoration:none\">Who is eligible for Family Open Work Permits?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"line-height:1.38\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt; font-variant:normal; white-space:pre-wrap\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\"><span style=\"font-style:normal\"><span style=\"text-decoration:none\">Only spouses of international students who are enrolled in any of the following programs are eligible to apply for family open work permits.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:disc\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt; font-variant:normal; white-space:pre-wrap\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\"><span style=\"font-style:normal\"><span style=\"text-decoration:none\">Doctoral programs<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:disc\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship\/services\/study-canada\/work\/help-your-spouse-common-law-partner-work-canada.html\" style=\"text-decoration:none\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt; font-variant:normal; white-space:pre-wrap\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\"><span style=\"font-style:normal\"><span style=\"text-decoration:none\">TEER 0 or 1 occupations&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:disc\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt; font-variant:normal; white-space:pre-wrap\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\"><span style=\"font-style:normal\"><span style=\"text-decoration:none\">TEER 2 or 3 occupations in sectors facing labour shortages or are prioritized by the government.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"line-height:1.38\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt; font-variant:normal; white-space:pre-wrap\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\"><span style=\"font-style:normal\"><span style=\"text-decoration:none\">The foreign worker should have at least 16 months before their work permit expires at the time of their spouse&rsquo;s application.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"line-height:1.38; margin-top:21px; margin-bottom:5px\"><span style=\"font-size:13.999999999999998pt; font-variant:normal; white-space:pre-wrap\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#434343\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\"><span style=\"font-style:normal\"><span style=\"text-decoration:none\">What if you applied for an Open Work Permit Before 21st January 2025?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"line-height:1.38\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt; font-variant:normal; white-space:pre-wrap\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\"><span style=\"font-style:normal\"><span style=\"text-decoration:none\">IRCC will continue to process all family open work permit applications submitted before 21 January 2025. They will process those applications under the original eligibility criteria. Work permits that were approved before 21st January 2025 remain valid until expires.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"line-height:1.38; margin-top:19px; margin-bottom:5px\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt; font-variant:normal; white-space:pre-wrap\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#666666\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\"><span style=\"font-style:normal\"><span style=\"text-decoration:none\">Some exceptional situations for foreign workers and international students<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p style=\"line-height:1.38\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt; font-variant:normal; white-space:pre-wrap\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\"><span style=\"font-style:normal\"><span style=\"text-decoration:none\">Specific family members (spouses and dependent children) of foreign workers and international can apply to renew their work permits under strict circumstances. They can still apply for other work permits offered by Canada.
